"in the wake of" ( a preposition problem)

Post by senaybeat » Thu Nov 24, 2005 7:19 am

Hi; there is a preposition problem. In a multiple choice question I and my colleagues couldn't decide which is better. Here is the question

....... the wake of the August 1991 Moscow coup, Turkmenistan voted to go independent, with Niyazov ........... charge

A) At/ of
B) On / with
C) For / as
D) In / ın
E) By / on

In my opinion "d" is the answer. But one of my friend says "b" is possible because we can "on the wake of" is possible and "with charge" is possible.
Is there any example that we use "on the wake of" this way?
THANK YOU

I think you're right. I've never heard anyone use "on the wake of". And "with Niazov with charge" is awkward and makes no sense either.

IN the wake OF a dramatic takeover at my English school, we were left with a complete nincompoop IN charge.

It was very sad. But true.

Prepositions are great. Sounds like a TOEIC problem. Preparing TOEIC is interesting, some American VS UK English usage differences....
