Advanced students of English often find that they are not making progress in their english study. But actually they are. Anyone who would like to explain? Are there any ways to make their progress more "visible"?

Yes, it's hard to prove. The only way to do it is to get them to produce a whole bunch of the same structure, and measure how often they get it right. Of course, this has to be a structure they are getting wrong, otherwise you can't measure them getting it right, and by definition, "advanced" learners generally make fewer errors.

What I sometimes do is bring something ridiculously hard to class and let them struggle with it, e.g. TOEFL problems. Or, I take something that is relatively easy for them, such as a common newspaper article, and read it as fast as I can.

Otherwise, what you can do is bring more abstract issues to class, e.g. philosophy, art, literature, etc.
