How to Teach

Hi
I am a 46 year old IT/programming Teacher from the UK, I have move to Vietnam and i have landed my self a Adult English teaching position at a local school.
I got my TEFL years ago and i have not used it since, so i am a bit out of touch. I have met another Teacher who just reads the unit from the New American Streamline book and the students to repeat it.
Now for me that is not enough and leads to a boring class and a bad way to teach as he does no planning and has no creativity. When i was teaching IT and Programming, it was easy to be creative and vary the classes as it is my favorite subject. So my questions are:
Can i just use the unit as a subject heading and make my own explanations, ideas and questions?
Do they expect me to just to the Read and Repeat classes?
What is expected of me on my first day.
Hope you can get back to me soon as i am teaching Book 3 in a few days.
