Hi.

I'm collecting some data on assessment strategies and grading policies of the ESL/ EFL teacher. (pronunciation, grammar, converstion etc)

i'd appreciate if you share your experiences :

what kind of assessment strategies you used?

what was your grading policies?

Did you find any strengths or weakness from your assessment strategies and grading policies?

I teach upper intermediate and advanced level adults in Japan using a skills and content-based syllabus.


assessment strategies:
We use continuous assessment based on performance in the classroom, worksheets done in class and homework

Promotion to the next level depends on this continuous assessment, attendence (2/3s), and performance on an end-of-term test.

grading policies
We don't grade--as it is a private school for adults. It is just a matter of being promoted to the next level at the end of the term. However we do stress to the students that they should not feel as if they have failed if they have to repeat a term (18weeks, 2 times a week).

Did you find any strengths or weakness from your assessment strategies and grading policies?

The test is based on skills development rather than learning specific vocab items or grammar structures. We would rather see the students develop the skills necessary to guess the meaning of unknown words (for example) rather than sitting down and learning prescribed sets of words or phrases. These skills are rather hard to test accurately which is why we include the continuous assessment as a heavy factor when making decisions about promotion.

Please, give some tips from your experiences~
Make sure the students know at the beginning of the term what is expected of them.

Keep reflecting on your experiences to continue improving on assessment procedures.
