Do you have money to buy books or are you looking for something on the Internet?
Any big bookstore will have an ESL or Literacy section and they sell books that are adult in content but with limited vocabulary. I think we discussed this before so I will try to look up the link.

I use this website with my adult beginners: www.thebeehive.org

I believe it is written at a 7th grade reading level and provides useful information for those living in the United States and possibly elsewhere.

You could also uses resouces like The Reader's Digest for short (and funny) stories - but remember, these will have 'advanced' expressions in them.

Do the stories necessarily need to be (printed to be) read first? I think it can help to develop the students' English by telling stories, anecdotes etc orally. Once Upon a Time by Morgan and Rinvolucri (CUP) will give you some ideas (as will their Dictation, though the latter perhaps only when the students are a bit more advanced). And don't forget how a lot of stuff is told in "historic present".
