I'd like to know your thoughts on what ethical responsibilities are involved in EFL management, bearing in mind that there are currently misunderstandings in China, for instance, relating to race (i.e., a white Frenchman can certainly speak English better than an American born Chinese because of race), accent (even though some Cameroonians are native-speakers, their accent isn't regarded as "standard", and the same can apply even to Australians and South Africans sometimes), and culture (all native Enlgish speakers necessarily celebrate Christmas and Easter, all Canadians speak Enlgish as their native language, native Enlgish speakers don't celebrate Kwanzaa, ec.).
I'vecome across training centres, public schools and even universities in China exploit these stereotypes for their advantage, thus feeding the stereotypes, rather than take the responsibility to try to correct them and stand up for their teachers.
And it can sometimes backfire. In one promotional presentation for a training school, a black woman was invited as a guest speaker, but when a member of the auddience asked the company representative if that woman would teach her child English, the representative answered that they have higher standards thatn to hire her. At that, the woman walked away, and it was found out later that she was actually hoping that the black woman would teach her doughter because she was tired of the same North american and British culture all the time.
Another case was with the same black woman applying for part-time work at another training centre. When the desk clerk answered that they didn't hire black people, one of the white staff members herd her and, upon hearing this, said that if she wasn't good enough, neither was he, and so he quit his job that very second, got on the lift with the black woman, went for lunch, and never went back.
What are your ideas about the ethical responsibilites of this industry to educate people about various prejudices relating to TEFL rather than exploit and so exacerbate these prejudices?
