I was just wondering what the main benefits of being ESL certified are for regular classroom teachers. I know that being ESL certified is a great help, but would like to get your opinions on the subject. Thanks!

Leslie, I can not answer that, but I do know as far as these classes, it can help you better understand where they come from so that you can better educated them. I think that we are making a good choice becoming ESL certified. I can see the benefits in our future. I hope that somebody can give us some ideas. :D

Hi leslie :o
I think the benefits you get being a bilingual/ESL teacher is being able to understand why children from other cultures act the way they do. I think you benefit because you get to learn and understand more about the cultures and about diversity. I don't know what other benefits you will get by being and ESL teacher, but I think that the best ones are being able to interact and know chidren from other places.

I'm not quite sure of all the benefits of becoming ESL certified, but I do know that it will help us better understand students who are learning English better. We are going to have these students in our classes weather we are in an ESL classroom or not. I also think the teaching methods we are going to learn can be applied in a main stream classroom with native speakers who are struggling.
I'm also glad that I am getting ESL certified because after taking this class I have a better understanding of other cultures and I will be will be able to understand children who are different from me better than if I had not taken these classes.
These are just my thoughts. I would love to hear from an experienced teacher on how we are really going to benefit from our certification in the real world.

I agree with Genie, one of the advantages to be ESL certified is learning the starategies and the modification you can make for your students in the classrooms, these strategies and modification can be used with ESL students or regular students. Most of the modifications you will do for an ESL students can be used for a regular student who is strugguling in your class. It is important to keep an open mind to help all our students.

I agree with Genie. Even students already speaking English will need help in our classrooms. The culture in an area can vary greatly, even between students who seem to have a great deal in common. I, personally, tend to stereotype English language learners as being from Asian or Hispanic countries, mainly because this has been my exposure so far. I realize non-English speakers are not the only students benefiting from this type of instruction. Students from various socio-economic groups and locations within a single district will come to the classroom using a variety of language, which is not necessarily Standard English.

I plan to teach in a large city and am expecting to meet children from various cultures. Blanca pointed out the importance of keeping an open mind to help all students. This class has helped prepare me to meet the needs of all students, in an ESL classroom or not, in learning the English language. I agree with Genie and would also like to hear responses from ESL classroom teachers!
