Literacy TA

This is not an ESL text but I think a Literacy TA workbook can be very useful in helping ELLs with reading comprehension on nonfictional texts. There are many genres of written language that students will have to comprehend. With nonfiction articles, students may struggle because there can be so many terms, content specific vocabulary and formalities of writing that students are not aware of. This Literacy TA workbook was designed to break down the barriers that all students face when comprehending articles and the worksheets can be scaffolded to meet the needs of ELL students. It helps hit many strategies that have been identified in ESL textbooks, such as the one written by H. Douglas Brown. Literacy TA helps identify the purpose for reading, skim the text, scan for specific information as well as analyze key terms. With its various graphic organizers and fill in the blank summary sheets to choose from, it really does make it easier for students to understand any article that they are reading.
