Post by lacrima » Sat May 14, 2005 4:28 pm

Hi I am an English teacher in Germany. At the moment I am teaching ' A Midsummer Night's Dream' in 12 th grade. I need some ideas for a character analyses of 'Puck'. What kind of student-centered methods can I apply?
cheers

Dear Lacrima,

Hope this response comes in time. Perhaps start with having your students think of a friend, relative or aquaintance who in some way acts like Puck. Then with a partner in class discuss in what way the person they know is like Puck. This could lead to the partners listing what they do and don't like about Puck, documented by lines in the play. Ultimately, students could write letters to Puck about a "mission" they would like to send Puck on for themselves.

I am interested in how your experience in teaching Shakespeare went. I am writing my thesis on this subject and would appreciate it if you would respond to a short, online survey of ESL/EFL teachers who have taught Shakespeare. I have gotten responses from every continent except Europe. So, I am searching for someone from Europe to round out the research.

Hi Suzanne, thanks for the answer, unfortunately it came too late :(
I worked with different pictures of Puck representing various images of him. It worked quite well, the student could choose the most appropriate one at the end of the character analyses. Most of them decided for the devilish looking:) Your way of analysing would be more or less a kind of introductory lesson and I would suggest it could be suitable for a lower grade.
take care
