There are supposedly 18 different types of metaphors,

Post by donnach » Thu Aug 14, 2008 12:30 am

is this one of them?

She hated shopping with the heat of a thousand suns.

Is "with the heat of a thousand suns" a metaphor? Could it possibly be an adverbial metaphor? Or is it not a metaphor at all, but rather an adverbial phrase?

Thanks,

Donna

Why do you laugh? (Though it is kind of a useless exercise because now I can't even remember what a submerged metaphor is, let alone all the other types.)
Don't you ever *need* to know some useless piece of information that you will promptly forget as soon as you find out?

I laugh because it is funny.

The nomenclatures of metaphors are not universally accepted.

Metaphors are essentially abstract and when people try to define the abstract in concrete terms I laugh.

'with the heat of a thousand suns' is a metaphor.

If you want to give it a name it is probably a 'conceptual metaphor'.

I'd say shopping with the heat of a thousand suns wouldn't be too pleasant - why not go or stay somewhere with air conditioning? :)

Whoever hates shopping with the heat of a thousand suns has me beat by a good three suns.

A metaphor is the expression of an understanding of one concept in terms of another concept. 'with the heat of a thousand suns' is a metaphor.
