Non Native Speaking Teacher

Post by upthebanner » Sun Dec 11, 2005 5:34 pm

Hi,

This is my 1st message on board. Hope it works. Iam a qualified ESL teacher and currently working in Germany. My girlfirend is from Germany and wants to teach in Asia next summer with me.

She speaks English fluently, with a nice Irish accent. I am Irish. Great Teacher i Know hahaha. Her Grammar is 10 times better thaN MINE.

What i need to know is, is it possible for her to rock up to Japan , Korea or somewhere without the appropiate papers. She will have her Masters later in Yr. So she has 3rd level education.

Should she do the CELTA propfecianecy and then the TEFL thingy. I heard it mite be possible to obtain papers in Bangkok. If anyone has any similar experiences i would appreciate any help.

Hi,

I am in China and would tell you that it is not impossible for your girlfriend to get a job, but would say that if she has even a hint of a non-native English speaking accent, you may have problems getting her work in the cities favorited by Western teachers.

I'm based in Hong Kong and from my experience, if she has that all important masters degree, she should be fine to get a teaching job. The accent that she has may be the only problem for her - though having said that I know quite a few scottish esl teachers working in Asia!
