what do we call a good english teacher?
this forum is for english teachers. but I am just a humble english learner, I would love to discuss about the qualities of english teachers with you guys.
Everyone has his/her own criteria to judge an english teacher, so do I. here are my criteria about the qualities of a good english teacher.
1) well-mannered
2) no foul language
3) good english
4) respectful
5) generous
6) warm-hearted
what do you think? guys?

I assume you mean that the teacher should show these personal qualities in the classroom. Just because we might appear brash, rude or overbearing in here in neither here nor there. We post on this forum in our own time (or, at least, when the DOS's back is turned), we do not offer a free EFL teaching service but rather swap ideas and help and advise students who come here with genuine questions and doubts. Where some of us lose patience is with those who come simply to start arguments.
When I'm in a class doing the job I'm paid to do, I try to exhibit all the qualities you list. When I post on Dave's I reserve the right to be myself, unless the moderator objects.

Why do you ask? I don't want to be rude, but it sounds like you are asking what makes a good "worker". A good teacher could be all of those things or none of those things. A good teacher is effective at helping you learn English even after you have finished the class. Meaning that the teacher was effective at teaching you how to learn a language for you to progress and to continue learning.
I have to admit it takes a certain amount of charisma to accomplish this and it is less likely it will happen if the teacher is a total $*&@&#! but I think you can be a total @$*#*$@ and still be a good teacher to some degree. Even BETTER than a nice teacher who doesn't know how to teach a language or isn't a "good" teacher.
What makes a "good" student?
I accept it when my students are rude, disrespectful people; I still teach them and they still learn. They can be a total @#**@# and still learn a lot. They can still be a "good" student.
You see I don't mean to be rude, but why do you ask? As a teacher I do not want to be judged on one person's assesment of my character as opposed to my abilities to teach. My abilities to teach can be evaluated and are open to criticism, which I welcome. Someone's opinion on whether I am rude, is not. They have the right to thier opinion.

however, I still think, if an english teacher, who is ill-behaved and rude and always mocks at his students for bad english of his students', then even if he has good english, he still has problem teaching english. because he will cause his students a terrible conception English is rude and foul just like the teacher. despite a misconception, it will still result in a bad consequence in teaching english.

in that case, I am sure you would be an excellent teacher. I would love to have such an english teacher as joshua2004 who neither mocks nor makes fun of my english skills.joshua2004 wrote:I agree. I think it is wrong for teachers to be rude and especially to mock their students. I have to spend the first few weeks, generally, building trust in the students that I am not going to make fun of their English. Mocking students is counterproductive to learning a language.
actually, I am a teacher too, not an english teacher, but a medicine teacher as well as a Physician. I am proud to say: I am a popular teacher, because I always praise those advanced students, meantime, I always encourage those slow students, instead of mocking them. I guess that making an excellent english teacher would be the same to make a good medicine teacher .

Pretend they speak English well, Rover! Rover! Next class, Rover! Wag you tail, Rover! Walkies! Time to please the students by going out with them 'spontaneously' in your own time so they can have free practice like we told you we expected you to during induction Rover! Nice Rover!
