Reddrose, you seem incapable of understanding what a discussion is (it does involve some give and take, mild bruising of egos etc), and even more incapable of conducting one in English. You also appear to not have the faintest idea of what "foul language" really is (for example, when I told you to 'butt out' in another thread, you seemed to think it meant '*ss' - was a noun - rather than understanding it to be a verb). Most telling of all, however, you don't seem to have any reason to be on these forums other than to make a nuisance of yourself, so we can only hope that you get banned sooner rather than later.
you used the word damn yesterday. is that foul language?fluffyhamster wrote:Reddrose, you seem incapable of understanding what a discussion is (it does involve some give and take, mild bruising of egos etc), and even more incapable of conducting one in English. especially, when you meet a person at first time.
and you wish I would be banned, but I am afraid that a qualified mod wouldn't ban a well-mannered english learner. and that is just your wish

You'd be better to use a negative question there (Isn't that foul language), it would strengthen your rhetoric immensely.Reddrose wrote:you used the word damn yesterday. is that foul language?
"Unfortunately", the "offending" post has been deleted by the mod, along with quite a few of yours, Redfaced: seems I wasn't the only one upsetting the powers that be on Dave's. But in answer to your question, no, I doubt if in the (deleted) context the word in question was very if at all offensive, and if you were half the learner you claim to be you would tackle rather than avoid more "interesting" language for the subtle nuances it can help one to convey regarding "stance" etc; certainly, it would increase if not your own expressiveness, then at least your stomach for adult discussion. Ah, but then I'm forgetting that you have no intention of seriously discussing anything of import on Dave's - you just seem to want to try to score points by taking on native speakers. Newsflash for you: you aren't winning any.
Just because u are a so-called teacher, so for you, the word damn is just an interesting word? and just because you are a native, then that means you have rights to insult those people whose english is bad? and what is wrong if I wanna talk to some native? (of course, I mean, nice native, not you)fluffyhamster wrote:You'd be better to use a negative question there (Isn't that foul language), it would strengthen your rhetoric immensely.Reddrose wrote:you used the word damn yesterday. is that foul language?

I am sorry that you, an english teacher, think that good english is your right to insult other people. however, if you wanna become a nice teacher, you have to learn how to behave well

with your narrow mind and your intolerance, it is hard for you to teach any student well! maybe you should think to change your occupation.fluffyhamster wrote:Impeccably flawed reasoning - well done! I'll let you decide what grade you should be awarded (F+, maybe?).
Right, lesson over, I'm outta here (I've got other, more deserving students to teach). 'Bye everyone!

Fowl language....
Good morning.
Coming from a "culture" where certain words, used by many, have been prohibited by a few, by law, I am confused by this concept of "foul language", is it what chickens use in the coop?
Coming into a culture where certain words might be considered as "foul" by others but where the prohibition lies in the manners of the speaker and his/her recognition or lack of same of the appropriateness of his/her use of such words, I am again confused.
Writing messages here, where the computer program singles out a dozen or so words that might be offensive and replaces them with "beep", I can only suppose that "foul language" goes beyond the words used (and thus prohibiting them gets us nowhere), but again, I see that the interpretation of any language as foul must lie in the interpretation of the reader.
fluff, as others do, has suspected that our new contributer, RedRose, is actually an old contributer whose style of writing and content tends to make the little hairs on the back of our necks stand up in fury. This new member seems to be confusing irony, sarcasm, even straightforward acusation as "foul" language. I can only suggest to this new member that either he/she find another forum where everyone speaks in peachy-cream, happy supportative "oh, honey" language (there are plenty of forums where such language is the only language allowed and other posts, such as many written by fluff, or myself, or metal, or Stephen Jones or any of us for that matter, would simply be deleted by the heavy censoring hand of the moderator), or that he/she do as many of us try to do, that is, ignore whatever bothers us about the writing of any member and get on with the discussion at hand.
peace,
revel.

You know very well why your posts were deleted, as I informed both you and Fluffy via PM. Deleting posts is not something I do lightly; as you can see, this thread is still active. I deleted posts that I felt went over the line; whether they were intentionally made that way or whether they were a result of your lack of understanding of how your words would be interpreted I don't know. Please feel free to continue posting on the forums; as long as everyone is civil there shouldn't be a problem.

Nobody talks about gossip anymore? I can't believe that!
I love gossip more than I love those academic posts
guys, let's talk about gossip!
for example, how many girlfriends has Bill Clinton have? Prince Charles and his recent wife had ever have a daughter? is that true?
see? Gossip is so interesting

Reddrose, I have so many things to say about your demeanor, and everything you've posting so far.
But I will simply say this: go to the student forum Current News. My reasons for this are simple. You can learn about how to have a normal conversation, and improve your English (that suggestion is based on the evidence you've provided us with) and talk about such things as Bill Clinton. What more could you (a person who needs any help you can get on improving your English, and one who needs to talk about gossip that doesn't interest anybody here) ask for? You can also find out about what constitutes real "foul language" (by the way, good one Revel).
("Damn".... thats so nasty!...I can't take this foul language!... We need to clean this site up.. even "foul" is nasty-sounding!....)
