How to correct this sentence?

Post by heyiamhere » Sat Aug 13, 2005 2:26 pm

In my grammar book, there is one question I am sure of.

------------------------------
Question : Correct the following sentence
"A rain forest receives over 100 meters of rain, distributes throughout the year"
Answer in the grammar book : Change "distributes"-->to "distributing"
------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------
I thought there might be three ways I can correct the sentence right.
I need your opinion on my answers.

--------------------------------------------------
1) A rain forest receives over 100 meters of rain, and the rain is distributed throughout the year
-> A rain forest receives over 100 meters of rain (which is) distributed throughout the year.
---------------------------------------------------

2) A rain forest receives over 100 meters of rain, and a rain forest distributes (over 100 meters of rain) throughout the year
--> A rain forest receives over 100 meters of rain, which distributes throughout the year.
---> A rain forest receives over 100 meters of rain, distributing throughout the year.

3) A rain forest, which receives over 100 meters of rain, distributes (over 100 meters of rain) throughout the year.
-> A rain forest, receiving over 100 meters of rain, distributes throughout the year.

Thanks

Rip up the book. Now.

All your 1 versions are fine.

All your 2 and 3 versions are wrong, I'm afraid. The first versions are correct English if you include "(over 100 meters of rain)" but I don't think that a rain forest distributes rain. "Distributed" just means that the 100 meters falls throughout the year and not only during part of it.

100 meters a year? The highest rainfall in the world is less than 12 metres per year. In Hawaii.

Rip it up.

'distributed' not 'distributes'
and
100 inches of rain, not 100 metres.
