Research Plan for an Asian EFL Study

I was wondering if any senior teachers here had any ideas that I could use or implement in doing some research for a thesis topic with university level Asian EFL learners.

I was thinking about something that I could do over 2 semesters with first and second year non-English major university EFL students in Taiwan. Sample size would be between 400 and 1,000 students.

I've thought about learner autonomy and learning strategy use but can't seem to think of a "doable" research plan

Anyone with a few ideas?

What's currently a hot topic in the world of Applied Linguistics?
