Like the wild elephant or the Pennsylvanian Polywog, the Applied Linguistics is a formidable beast, only to be faced by those with years of training, or a snappy forum handle. Common training acronyms for the Applied Linguistics (henceforth referred to as TAL) include CELTA, DELTA, BELTA, FELTA, and MELTA. These are the names of a family of wondrous sea otters, from whom all TAL knowledge bursts forth like a group of Japanese Kindergartners running away with my shoes to throw them once again into the cleaning bucket. These sea otters dispense their knowledge through various publications, Internet sites, and messages hidden in fish. Other acronyms such as TEFL, SLA, TOESL, TESL, ESL, ROFL, ROFLCOPTER, and LOLERSKATES are also quite common, and all mean approximately the same thing. For more wonderful information on TAL, you must travel to the land of makebelieve, where the highly motivated English learners reside, and there commune with the sea otters in a thoughtful sharing of feelings and ideas.
