All around (or over) the world

I think you're right about that. I just vaguely remembered discussing this very thing with someone sometime in the last year.

"all" is omissible only in "all around the world" and not in "all over the world". So the latter is always used intact, whereas the former can be used without the "all" too.
???

scattered over the world
dispersed over the world
spread over the world
flows over the world
etc.

And how about this gem?

I always imagined that they used all over to fit the rhythm, but maybe round would have had a different meaning. All over seems "stronger" somehow.

I think it's because of that linked "ll + o". "Allover" sounds better, rolls off the tongue much easier, than "allround", IMO.

Quo at Cardiff Castle, many years ago, is one of the best rock concerts I've ever seen. No shame.
