I need Heeeeeelp

Post by Desirella » Thu Jan 18, 2007 11:33 pm

Hi guys I´m new on this (forums). I'm an English student and I'm working on a research about ESL approaches. One of the questions on my project is the following:

The reaction against Behaviorist view of language acquisition led to the development of generative theories. innatism and the functional-cognitive approach. Considering these two approaches how do they relate to the concepts of linguistic determinism and cognitive determinism?

I have concluded that innatism relates to cognitive detrminism in the fact that innatism explains that the mind is born with ideas/knowledge as cognitive determinism explains that every event, including human cognition, decision and action, is causally determined by an unbroken chain of prior occurrences.

On the other hand Linguistic determinism relates to functional-cognitive approach since the former states that thought is shaped by the enviroment, experiences around us (even language), and languages and linguistic determinism claims the idea that language shapes thought.

I don't know if I'm ok, please please please help me with this!
