I went home by horse?????

I went home by horse?????

The other day I was asked whether one could say I went home by horse (the literal translation is a common expression in Portuguese). I told them one is more likely to say something like I rode home on my horse, well I guess...

What's your opinion? does by horse sound strange or is it acceptable?
