Non-definig relative clauses

Post by Elvis » Fri Jun 22, 2007 6:41 pm

Dear ones,
Will be glad to hear an answer for my problem here...Q1
John is an american writer. He wrote the novel roses.
can we make a non definig relative clause this way or no:
John, who is an american writer, wrote the novel roses.
or is the only way to say:
John, who wrote the novel roses,is an american writer.

Q2-
My uncle says he does not notice the check points in front of his store. His store is in the centre of the town.

In how many ways can we form a non-definig relative clause:
can we say:
My uncle says he does not notice the check points in front of the store, which is in the centre of the town.
or is this the only way :
My uncle ,whose store is in the centre of the town, says he does not notice the check points.
many thanks in advance.

All of those examples are correct, although a few things need tweaking.

Q1-
John is an American writer. He wrote the novel Roses.

John, who is an American writer, wrote the novel Roses.
John, who wrote the novel Roses, is an American writer.

Q2-
My uncle says he does not notice the checkpoints in front of his store. His store is in the center of town.

My uncle says he does not notice the checkpoints in front of his store which is in the center of town.
My uncle, whose store is in the center of town, says he does not notice the checkpoints.

You may also form non-defining adjective phrases as follows:

An American writer, John wrote the novel Roses.

Or,

John, an American writer, wrote the novel Roses.

Treating location of the store as a parenthetical expression, you may write fo the other expression:

My uncle, having (operating) a store located in the center of the town. says he does not notice the check points in front of it (the store).
