Why cant I say that a window is 'too open'??

Why cant I say that a window is 'too open'??

Being a non-native teaching Englsih speakers some student laughed at me when I told some other student to close the window because it was "too open"'. Does is sound that funny?? What can I say instead??

Hmm, maybe say, "The window is open too wide." ?

...or "open too far." Or even, "too far open."
