I'll also have to endorse use of "they" as a singular pronoun when the gender of the antecedent is either unknown or unimportant or even sometimes in cases where the user wishes to hide the gender. I recall an example in one of Michael Lewis' books (forget which one) whereby a young lady in the audience where Lewis was lecturing about this very thing gave the example that when she was a teenager and her boyfriend called on the telephone, her dad (who didn't approve of the boyfriend) asked who it was. She replied that it was "someone from history class calling about the homework assignment, and they wanted...." :wink:
