Metal, I am only continuing to respond here just to make it very clear that you don't get away with barging onto a thread, making clearly provocative and quite indefensible comments, before signing off as if you were somehow justified and in the right for doing what you did. Perhaps if you can restrain yourself from posting yet again (and again and again), I will somehow manage to do so too (but I can assure you that if you do continue to post on this thread, I will continue to counter for as long as you seem to want to keep lashing out and venting whatever frustrations have built up within you).

I know you like to think of yourself as top-level linguist, but please, just stop it with the patronizing. The way you act on the forum, it's as though nobody else could ever arrive at any sort of "answer" (even, yes, <<GASP>> a provisional one) without your "gracious" help and constant prodding. We aren't all newbie teachers with absolutely no interest in linguistics whatsoever, so just shut it.

See the first "barge in", the first provocation:

Take a leaf from your own book before you begin accusing others. I will now stop posting in this thread. That is the only way to counter your childish need to have the last word.

I didn't know one could "barge in" on one's own thread...but never mind.

You are obviously incapable of recognizing a joke, then. Lighten up before you drive people away from Dave's or have a heart attack (or both).

Hmm 'to barge'...seeing as you have so much free time (and there I was thinking you were a top-flight linguist jetting off to conferences every five minutes), perhaps you could find a ten-foot bargepole and think of a use for it other than for prodding teachers awake (e.g. rather than would+not+touch+them+with..., how about can+stick+it+where+the+sun+don't+shine).

Not so bored and sleepy that you couldn't wait to pounce on my words whilst I edited them down to the bare essentials (considerate of me, eh, what with reading being such a strain for you).

I know I probably should've used scare quotes there (thus: "own"), but I had done that once for your benefit already. You seem so unable to read anything other than what you "need" to into other people's words that it probably just isn't worth the extra effort on my part to "indulge" you further.

So you're still not done? How long would you like this to go on? Until your ego is in balance?

My ego is in balance, Grasshopper - it's yours that is not.

What is the sound of one hand slapping?
a) Metal slapping himself on the forehead when the satori finally hits.
b) Metal being spanked.
c) Both of these, yet neither of these.

Aw, I dunno, metal, my jokes seem a bit more varied than your stale one (YAWN x2) - they're keeping you awake at least, anyway.

'I'm bored' - the usual refrain of children with absolutely no imagination, and destructive tendencies.

There are umpteen things you could be doing, young Timmy - how about:
1) checking out who 'Timmy' is in back issues of Viz
2) seeing if any dictionaries have definitions for 'to troll' or 'to flame sb, to get flamed; to start a flame war'
3) answering some of the more worthy (less unworthy?) among the 'Unanswered posts'
4) picking up an old thread or two from where you left them
5) not picking your toenails
6) not picking your belly-button
7) picking your nose less
8) starting more threads rather than scratching your backside
9) making a list of resolutions for the New Year ('I will be less Scrooge-like')
10) admitting every once in a while that you aren't always in the right or even right
