Though

Post by Tessa Olive » Mon Aug 16, 2010 7:39 am

How can I explain the use of 'though' in the following sentence?
(Father recounts his young daughter's day) By the time we got to the lighthouse though, she was really cranky.
Thanks in advance.

Tessa, I always default to the lexical meaning of the word first, then try to place it in context with the usage. "though" means such things as: however, in spite of, nevertheless .... if you can substitute the lexical into the sentence you can explain it much better. In your example the use of "though" in what the father said relates more to: however:

"By the time we got to the lighthouse, however, she was cranky"
