Mental gap....I wish

Hey all.

It's not often that I ask for help....this one is simply because I don't remember. My mother often said something like:

If ---- were ---- then we'd ----
If wishes were fishes we'd all have some fried.

The last missing word would have to rhyme with "fried" and it comes to mind:

If if onlies were ponies we'd all take a ride.

If anyone remembers this little second (?) conditional saying, could they jot it in in this thread? And if no one knows it, how about making up first lines? Only rule I see is the rhyme with "fried". Could be fun....

If mabies were babies then we'd've heard that they'd cried

If pity were witty, we'd all have to abide

If sorries were lorries we'd all have a drive. (near rhyme that one....)

:D

peace,
revel.

My grandmother used to say "If ifs and ands were pots and pans there'd be no need for tinkers".

I know it doesn't rhyme but thought I'd mention it anyway.

Good morning all.

Thanks, so much, lorikeet, for the link. It was the word "beggars" that was holding me up there, and a surity that the first was not wishes but some other word that rhymed with horses, following the internal rhyme of the second line. The part about tinker's hands also sound familiar but my mother went more for the wishes/fishes version. Interesting that is is presented as a Scottish proverb, three of my four grandparents were from Scotland.

Well, this was a short thread! Question answered rapidly and well. What a pleasure.

peace,
revel.
