“Like” can serve many functions:

preposition
conjunction
adverb
adjective
verb

It can act as a substitute for:

say
said
that

Do you feel that it can often serve too many functions?

In this usage "like" is serving the information-theory function of breaking up the message to make it more easily understood.

It is worth noting that this usage comes to us from the substance-abuse generation who had to repackage even the simplest message (a) to help them formulate it and (b) to help the other druggies absorb it.

FGBs

Hey all!

Oh come on now, lolwhites, don't pick on FGBs (for those who don't recall, "fermented grain beverages"), I've gotten my tongue tied up a lot over the years imbibing them and yet have not fallen to the "like" to fill in where my grey cells could not! :)

Harzier's theory on drug use and "like" is curious, but I've also smoked my doobies and not used "like".

Maybe it's because I have a college education? Like, wow! Like, maybe that's the, like, reason!

Just being, like, light here folks! Not much brain power left after today's classes.

peace,
revel.
