Agreement problem

Could you please help me with this agreement problem:
Reading and writing is/are taught in this school.

I can accept both of them.

"Reading and writing are taught in this school." to me implies that there are two subjects.

"Reading and writing is taught in this school." to me implies that they are thought of in tandem, as one item.

I don't know what the rest of you think ;). (That's the fun part :D.)
