Who is interested in Politeness studies?

Post by sayeh-KTU » Fri Mar 25, 2005 11:43 am

Dear Colleagues,
I am an MA student of Applied Linguistics in Turkey. My thesis topic is Politeness. If you are interested in filling out a questionnaire related to politeness studies, would you please send an e- mail to me so I can send you the questionnaire? It will be very helpful for my study. Thank you very much in advance.

May I respectfully suggest that an on-line survey would be likely to get more hits, and at the risk of sounding impolite myself, asking people on line for their email is often done for dubious purposes.

I am also interested in this topic and am studying it under the title of Appraisal in the Systemic Functional Linguistics model. It makes such a difference in the tone and cohesion of the classroom and the reponse of the emails or chat lines or bulletin boards associated with classrooms or lectures at the university level. Two of my fellow PhD students have focused on this and discovered that the use of supportive words and phrases significantly iincreased the sense of belonging in the classroom . lowered the stress levels and increased the output of the chat lines, especially if the teacher provided positive words.
