why not exchange universities' IDs 2 collect our database?

Post by Peace4World » Fri Nov 25, 2005 9:57 am

Hello every body,

I'm a new member here. I'm pleased to join such a cooperative community. I do some rsearches and papers on Applied Linguistics and I always need online databases. I believe many of you experience the same thing. So, why do we not exchange universities' IDs? (for those who already have their own.) I mean reasearchers, MA and PhD students have access to their universities' databases with their IDs. If evey one gives the other what s/he has and collect them together we will have a comprehensive database!

Please, any one who has any ID pm me soon and I'm ready to send mine to whoever need them.

Bye

It seems you are asking for individuals to give you their personal ID so you can access the database they use, but this, in my opinion, is a terrible idea. I am only leaving this post here because you may, as you say, be a researcher who hasn't thought out the ramifications of what you are asking. One can never fully trust anyone they meet on the Internet, I'm afraid. Giving any of your ID to anyone, especially if it allows for access to your university database, is not only foolish, but probably against the university rules.

Though I agree with the idea of freedom of information, I think giving out IDs and passwords leaves one vulnerable for missuse and abuse of that information.

So, why do we not exchange universities' IDs?
Because it's illegal for a start.

Oh!!!
Personal IDs??!!! Yes, this seems a terrible idea, and foolish as well!! I don't mean to give your individual IDs because simply I will not accept to give anyone mine!! But I mean universities usually register in some databases and "distribute" certain user names and passwords to be used by iteir students to access to that database (not the database of the university). These passwords are anounced and sometimes published in the journals of the universities. They even do not write that they are restriced to their students; I don't see any rules written!! So I wondered if it was ok to exchange them as long as we are here for knowledge and researching. I haven't ever thought this is illigal as they are anounced as I said.

Some universities require your student ID to have the permission to access to their databases, but this is not what I meant because it seems illigal and can be misused as well (although I think even the students of the university may missuse and abuse of that information.)

I'm really thankful for your replies. I just wanted to know your feedback about the idea. I hate the idea of losing HONESTY to fulfill your personal ends!!!

Please, I want to hear your opinion and know about this issue, and sorry if I was mistaken.

If Universities want to make some or all of their material public they are quite free to do so.

However, often a university will buy an online copy of a book or make a subsription to an online journal for its staff and students only. That is to say they have been granted permission by the copyright holders to give access to their staff and students and have paid a proportionate price. If they allow Joe Public to access the copyright material, then they would be in breach of the agreement.

The Royal Society has come out against replacing academic journals with online publishing:
