Beckham not on ball with son's sums

David Beckham's performances on the football pitch may frequently add up but the England captain concedes that his six-year-old son's maths homework once left him baffled.

The 30-year-old star said his eldest child Brooklyn approached him for help with a school assignment one night but the task was too much for the footballer.

"Their homework is so hard these days," he told The Mail on Sunday's Live magazine.

"It's totally done differently to what I was teached when I was at school, and you know, I was like, 'Oh my God, I can't do this'," he added.

The Real Madrid player, who hopes to lead England to World Cup glory this summer, suggested that his wife Victoria helped Brooklyn with the work instead.

However, he did tell the youngster: "I'll read your book with you."

Beckham also told the magazine that he avoided repeating "lucky" routines before a match in case they left him confused.

Brooklyn, who will be seven next month, is a pupil at a £1,200-a-term British school in Madrid which follows the National Curriculum, according to the Mail on Sunday.

He is due to take key-stage tests later this year which may include questions such as subtracting 11 from 50.

Another typical homework question for his age group is working out the change from 50p after buying a pencil costing 24p and an eraser priced at 7p.

Ho ho ho. How easy to impicitly mock a 'thick' sports star. Hmm - I know wealth, fame success and a fair amount of ability aren't everything (but they help?) but why the need to point out intellectual failings of someone who has never claimed anything in the brain department? Seems rather petty and pointless to me ... but it did come from the Mail.
