This is probably not an applied linguistics question, but I posted on adult ed and got some views but no responses.
I am currently working on my TEFL, and have an idea I was thinking about implementing in my US community, which has a significant Latin American immigrant population segregated from everyone else.
I just don't know if anyone has ever used this as a model before, and if it would be a dismal failure.
Here it is: two hours of get togther for those who want to learn English and those who want to learn Spanish. One half of the group is focused on conversational activities in one language and the other half focuses on the other language. Of course, there is food involved. I am hoping this would not only help folks learn language, but also improve relationships and community in my county. I know that my Mexican friend and I are both improving our language skills simply by hanging out together, and we probably speak at the same level in each other's language.
As I speak at a beginner level of Spanish, I am wondering if I should co-facilitate this with a Spanish speaking teacher, if I begin this project at all.
