Correcting written papers

I am teaching a writing class next semester and would appreciate any advice on marking papers. I have come across codes for grading such as:

s = spelling
wo = word order
t = wrong tense
s/p = wrong usage of singular/plural form

I think this system would work well to elicit student's ability to self correct but lacks the "hand holding" that so many students desire. Being told what is right and wrong is something I wish to do, but spending so much time correcting remedial, repetitive mistakes is not.

I would like to get some ideas for correcting student's written assignments.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I use similar codes for error correction. These are useful for sentence error corrections.
When marking writing papers, I like to give the students some feedback about their ideas and organization as well. It is time consuming but the students will benefit from it.
