Assessment question
I am a new elementaty ESL techer in the US. I have not yet studied assessment and am researching info. What are the most common tools? Thanks.
ESLOA
You could try ESLOA, English as a Second Language Oral Assessment.
It is pretty easy, straight forward, and quick to administer ... but is a one on one type of assessment, since it is oral (not written).
It has scoring sheets and a guide to move through 4 levels. The assessment can be used for initial placement and progess assessments.
There are other tools, but this one is good for tutors working with smaller groups ... Published by Literacy Volunteers of America ... now Proliteracy WorldWide.

Here is an ESLOA Assessment Benchmark/Scoring matrix along with a few other assessment methods. You might find this helpful to orient yourself before you get your hands on an assessment kit.
