We are starting a community ESL class. I would like to prepare an needs assessment. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The type of needs analysis you will need will depend on the kind of curriculum that you want to take. If you're close to a library, try looking for the following book:

Jack Richards, Curriculm and Materials Design.

This book contains everything you need to know about needs analyses.

Marcethebest is right in asking you to expound a bit, though. How old are your students? Will they be mainstreamed into regular classes? Are designing a structural curriculum, situational, communicative, etc? How much time is allotted for the course?

Are you starting with some students or with no students? Can you describe the situation a little more?
