participation and grading

Post by tomballjerry » Wed Dec 06, 2006 4:01 am

Could anyone offer some suggestions for grading participation, whether on a daily or weekly basis throughout a sixteen week session? I'm particularly thinking about this for an advanced level adult class in which the students will be reading a series of essays and studying from a book that deals with vocabulary building. Participation combined with attendance accounts for 40% of the student's semester grade.

Hi there!

I used to teach in the Houston area too.

One suggestion is to start with a full score and then make a note of people who are not doing work and participating as well as those who seem to be going the extra mile as you go about each lesson. This requires much less tracking than trying to come up with a score for each student for each lesson. Weekly scores where you think about each student and kind of feel it out tend to be overly subjective.

Good luck
