If you have a new student who has recently immigrated from a different country. What information about the child's culture would you like to have? How would you get it?

Hi,
Since this situation occurs many times in my classes i can only suggest to you what i do -
First i feel that it is important to know what are the limits regarding physical touch (Not to fear...) is putting a hand on his shoulder for support acceptable?? Is shaking his hand accebtalbe? What kind of relationship is acceptable with teacher from his home land? You don't want him to feel akward if you smile/laugh at him or to be friendly. Of course the opposite is true also. Is he expecting you to be friendly?
This is all Home work that i do before even thinking about English.
I usually talk to his parent via a translater if needed, If the child has immigrated alone (very sad situation...) then i look for someone else (Aunt, friends) there is always someone.
I really hope that this is what you asked for and that this helps you. :D
