Teacher Discussion Forums

I have heard tell, in courses, of this method, "Community Language Learning", in which groups of people sit around and translate texts into their own language in a very relaxed environment. It doesn't sound effective, but it does perhaps sound a good way to begin for those who lack confidence. Does anyone out there actually practice this method
