LDCE: avenue (3) BrE a road or broad path between two rows of trees, especially one leading to a big house
Is it not used in the US in the above meaning?

It just means the same as street, as far as I know. Boulevard is used for large streets with a strip of trees down the middle, but streets and avenues seem to be interchangeable at this point.
