Teaching CFA

Post by monseul » Mon Jan 23, 2006 2:43 am

Not sure if this is the right place but, I have a student that is planning on taking the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) test in English by the end of the year. He wants me to help him, however I have no background in this. Although I do want to help him.

Any thoughts? I don't know where I'd even start.

Suggestions much appreciated.

Regards!

You can offer to help him with his general English.

If he has any texts that you can use. You can help him see through the metaphors and idioms.
Be careful with vocab, as some words can have specific meanings in some contexts. The discourses may also be industry specific, but you may be able to acess a good dictionary of finance and/or a glossary.

Don't be afraid to tell the student if you do not know something.

It may be you need to send him to get help from someone with a background. But you can still support in other areas.

There are also some ESL texts specifically focusing on finance--English for International Banking and Finance, by Corbett, is sitting on my desk, and I've used a couple of others that are good. You may be able to get CFA prep materials from an Internet source, or--if you're an American and near a military base--see if you can get to a military base library. They usually have a reference area with a lot of different test-prep materials. You won't be able to check anything out unless you have a military ID card (or know someone who does) but you might be able to copy some materials in the library.
