How to teach extra-murals?

Post by Vytenis » Sun Nov 02, 2003 11:53 am

Hi everyone!

My name is Vytenis and I am a Busines English teacher at Siauliai University, Lithuania. I have been teaching English there since 1998. Now, my question is as follows:
Sometimes I have to teach Business English to the groups of extra-mural students (these are the studens who come once every few months, take the classes and then go home and come again a few months later to take exams). Most of these students are in their thirties or even forties. Most of them speak practically no English (they all have supposedly been "learning" English at school, but I guess we all know what does it mean in reality :( ) So my task is to teach these people Business English. Now, how can I possibly teach them anything if they just come once every few months, have a few classes with me and then go "study" at home. I know how they "study" :( . So in the ultimate analysis the whole thing seems to be the waste of money, energy and time. They do not learn anything in spite of all my efforts and energy and that starts getting me down. I keep telling them that if they don't do the self-study, there will be no use of our classes. Of course, we try to read some Business English texts so that they at least get some acquaintance of how Business English looks like. But I am afraid, even most of that stuff flies over their heads. Could anyone share with me their ideas of how to deal effectively with such students?

Hi--I just have a few questions. When you said "I know how they 'study'" did you mean they don't do any of the self-study work? Do they get a grade for this, a certificate, or are they just doing it on their own? Could you use some kind of interim test that they had to mail you? Do they have access to computers if you put something on line? Is there truly no communication with them or between them during the months when they are not with you? Do the same students return again and again, or just for the beginning and ending of the class?

Thanks

Nice hearing from you! These students all major in Business and Economics. Business English is NOT their main subject (although mandatory). They just have to take the course in Business English for the first two years of their studies. As I have mentioned, most of them speak practically no English. The problem is that I want to teach them at least a little Business English during that time. Of course I give them some assignments, but I guess you know what adult students are like... During those first two years we will meet approximately 10 times. What do you think would be the best way to teach them something during those 10 meetings? What assignments should I give? The topics on the curriculum seem ridiculous for me, because they are totally useless and unrealictic. I just try to give them some business reading - maybe this at least will help them increase their vocabulary and repeat some grammar basics. Many of them do have computer access and I send them my assignments by email.
