Obviously there are companies, with people needing to use (and using) English to do business; what is less clear is what "Business English" is, and how (and if!) it should differ from English generally (i.e. ESL courses).

There isn't a lot of discussion on this topic; it seems teachers assume there is such a thing as BE and "trust their textbook" to "kill two birds with one stone" (that is, fill any gaps ability-wise in the underlying language whilst teaching the specifics of whatever facet of BE). I did find a few mutterings on the following threads, however:
http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/teacher/v ... php?t=1628
http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/teacher/v ... =3389#3389
http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/teacher/v ... php?t=1531

I think it ultimately boils down to empirically comparing what language is in potentially longer, more comprehensive general courses with BE ones, and then asking if students who are enrolled in BE courses are at a level of competence high enough that the base language level of the students assumed by the BE text is accurate.

thanks
