I might have known...

Post by Itasan » Sun Sep 25, 2005 1:38 am

"I might have known you would come back so early."
What does that mean?
1. (a softer way of saying) "I knew you would come back..."?
2. "I think I had known you were coming back..., but I forgot"?
Thank you.

To me, saying "I might have known you would come back so early" has the connotation of "If you had told me you'd be back early, I could have made other arrangements...but I should have known that you would not do something like that."

I'd only use the "I might have known..." phrase if I were a bit upset with someone. But maybe that's just my feeling about it.

Yes I agree. It's sort of a "I should have expected that you would do something like that, and I am a bit annoyed." to me.
