I might have known...

"I might have known you would come back so early."
What does that mean?
1. (a softer way of saying) "I knew you would come back..."?
2. "I think I had known you were coming back..., but I forgot"?

To me, saying "I might have known you would come back so early" has the connotation of "If you had told me you'd be back early, I could have made other arrangements...but I should have known that you would not do something like that."

I'd only use the "I might have known..." phrase if I were a bit upset with someone. But maybe that's just my feeling about it.

Yes I agree. It's sort of a "I should have expected that you would do something like that, and I am a bit annoyed." to me.
