farther / further

Post by riglos » Wed Sep 28, 2005 1:25 am

Hi people!

I'd like to know what's the reason for "Are there any further questions"? being correct, and the following version, incorrect: "Are there any farther* questions?" If both words are accepted as the comparatives of "far", why is the last collocation not accepted?

Thanks a lot!

Mara.

Hi Mara!
When you are talking about distance then it’s possible to use either “further” or “farther” equally well and with no change in meaning. For example: I drove to Tuscany last year for my holidays, it was further/farther away than I’d realised!
But
When you are talking about something that is additional or extra, etc., then only “further” can be used (farther doesn’t work then). For example: Further to your request for an increase in your fees for teaching our staff (and sometimes performing minor miracles) the management regrets that they are, at this time, unable to give your undoubted and undervalued talents the recognition they are due. Hope this helps!
