Are these all used in the US?
What are the British equivalent?

Councilor - member of local council, elected member of local government. This is an unpaid position but they can claim expenses. Usually belong to a political party, but occasionaly independents.
One of these councilors will be elected mayor by his/her peers. In almost all councils this is an honorary position. Although elected, there is often a rota with councilors taking it in turn to be mayor.

I seem to recall, from living in New York (state), that the state legislature was called the "assembly", although other states I've lived in just use the term "legislature".
