Hello All,
I have been teaching business english for about 5 months now for a business who is transferring employees from China and teaching them english. I had 8 students and charged $125/hr to teach them. I was told that that price exceeded the going rate for teaching business english. I'm still new at this and I was wondering if anyone had any input about an appropriate pay scale for business english so that I can be competitve.
Thanks again.

Depends on the local market. Phone around some of the bigger vendors where you are and find out what they charge. Then find out what they offer. If you have some unique selling point, which is why they came to you, you can negotiate on this.
For example, some outfits only use set course materials, and the instructor does not (cannot/not able to/ not allowed to) tailor the materials. If you can offer a tailored course you need to bargain.
Be aware, the bill payer is noly trying to negotiate you down. This is normal. If you want to earn 125 you need to start at 140 and let them beat you down.
Its your bread non the table, it is your call.
Be aware rates vary. I work for an outfit that charges 10x the competitions price for corporate custoers. Both we and the competition are in a growth market and are growing.

I wonder who told you it exceeded the going rate. If it was your employer, I'm not sure I'd necessarily believe them. I think it would vary in the area, however. That wouldn't be excessive where I am. In fact, it would be rather reasonable.
