thrash one's way to freedom

"The shark thrashed its way to freedom."
1. Does this 'thrash' mean 'to move from side to side
in a violent or uncontrolled way'?
2. I wonder if it's in a net or something and is struggling
to find a way (hole or something) to become free.

I think your suggestion (1) is closer to what the sentence tries to convey.
