"He could only be dealt with on his own terms."
I wonder what this means.
"If you were to deal with him successfully,
you ought to follow his own ideas"?

You got it just about right.

Terms means conditions, so it means he will only deal with people if he can set the conditions (details in a contract, price, venue or so on).
