Using the Internet to teach ESL science, math and SS

Post by kathyfelts » Mon Oct 10, 2005 2:59 pm

Hi Everyone,

I am just finishing up a new Powerpoint Presentation on how to use the Internet to teach kids' ESL in the content areas of science, math and social studies. The powerful thing about using these websites is that they all include interactive, hands-on activities. For instance, students can learn about Pangea by fitting the continents into the original whole. They can do tangrams in a virtual math lab. They can create a weather report complete with high and low pressure systems, storms and temperatures. For middle students, there is a great video clip on how the Coriolis Effect works. I love to use these sites because I learn right along with the students! I almost always use material created for elementary students so that I don't have to do much prep work. The good thing about my using PPT to show you around is that I can include screen shots of everything. I try to make the presentation I wish someone would have made to show me around.

Let me know if you would like me to email you a copy. If you know of a site or two you think I might want to include, please give me the url and I will check it out.
Good luck!
Kathy
PS I still have the old presentation outlining how I got starting teaching online with a webcam.

ESL in the Content Areas

Post by kathyfelts » Tue Oct 25, 2005 10:31 am

Hi Everybody,
I was a little surprised to get so many requests for the PPT on teaching ESL in the content areas with online web resources. Not that many people seem to be reading the post, but I guess the ones that are are interested in the subject. While I was doing my research, I came across (again) the BBC website at http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/sciencecli ... _8_9.shtml.

I do my research every morning with an 11-year old from Korea. Today when we used this site, he didn't want to stop studying - the highest praise for material! Since I teach online, we can use application sharing in MSN. If you are interested in teaching online, being able to application share and use the whiteboard are essential. Is this something you already know how to do, or should I include instructions in the Powerpoint Presentation? My guess is that I should include instruction on how to use application sharing and how to use the material interactively - right? I love to put together these PPTs because I get to share info about my favorite topic in the world, but I don't always know how much to include and how much to leave out.

I appreciate your guidance in advance,
Kathy
