Can anyone recommend a good CALL program

Post by MGHines1 » Wed Mar 12, 2003 12:54 am

Looking for a good, all-inclusive software program to use during my home tutoring sessions. Any recommendations? Was considering the two following programs.

Thanks!
Michael

A+ Advanced Learning System
Machine: Mac, Win comprehensive
Publisher: American Education Corporation
Approximate single-unit price: $150
Purchase options: lab, site, volume
Level: Beginning, intermediate, advanced For: All
Info from: Healey
This is a comprehensive program that combines extensive management tools with step-by-step instruction and practice in a variety of areas, including reading, writing, grammar, listening, science, and social studies. Additional third-party software can be added to the management system, which allows teachers to set sequences of recommended lessons and track learner progress. Without the management system, moving from one unit to another is quite awkward. The screens are very basic and somewhat repetitive; students accustomed to a multimedia presentation in interactive programs may be disappointed. Programs cost $150 per title, with 68 titles available. A demo of this program is on the TESOL/CELIA CD-ROM. (Healey)

Advanced level multimedia interactive American English programs using a combination of 'soap opera' approach and current events/issues to maintain user interest. Main 'soap opera' story concerns a foreign student in the US to study marketing. Useful for TOEFL prep and developing listening skills to function in an English-speaking academic environment. Requires CD-ROM drive and speakers, 286 or better PC with 1 MB RAM, and DOS 5.0 or better. Single user price $400 for set of 3 CDs. Master site license for all CPI titles available. Special student price of $95 for set of three CDs at schools with a master site license.
